How to use the Pattern Tester

Testing your pattern repeat is an important step in surface pattern design.
With this free tool, you can preview your designs at different scales and compare repeat styles before using them in your creative projects.

1. Upload your pattern

Choose a JPG or PNG file of your pattern tile.

2. Choose your repeat style

Switch between Straight and Half Drop to preview how your design repeats across a larger area.

3. Explore different scales

Adjust the tile width to see how your pattern looks at smaller or larger scales. Experiment until you find the right balance for your design.

4. Save your preview

Download a JPEG preview of your pattern to keep as a reference or share with others.

Why Pattern Scale Matters

The scale of a pattern can completely change its appearance. Small-scale designs can create subtle texture, while larger motifs often make a stronger visual statement.

When designing for fabric, wallpaper or home decor, it helps to consider how your pattern will look across the intended surface. A design that looks beautiful on your screen may feel very different when repeated across curtains, bedding or a wall.

Use the Pattern Tester to explore different scales and discover new possibilities for your designs.

Straight Repeat vs. Half Drop

A straight repeat arranges pattern tiles in aligned rows and columns. The edges line up directly, creating a regular grid.

A half drop repeat offsets every second row by half the height of the pattern tile. This creates a more staggered arrangement that is often used for floral, botanical and other organic designs.

Both repeat styles can work beautifully. The best choice depends on the composition of your artwork and the effect you want to achieve.

Tip: Always check that the edges of your original pattern tile connect seamlessly. A repeat preview helps you inspect the overall flow, but it does not replace checking the tile edges themselves.
